Pattern 6: Courtyard Depth and Width

Eight Floors Below Courtyard Aperture

Pattern Filmstrip

At eight floors below the courtyard aperture, illuminance from the courtyard glazing is negligible. The false color image shows a substantial disparity between the brightness of surfaces at the courtyard side and the outside perimeter of the office area. However it does provide visual relief through views to the exterior. Again, since the floor plate is narrow, 85% of the floor area receives sufficient daylight to meet 300 lux of horizontal illumination.

Pattern 6: Courtyard Depth and Width

Six Floors Below Courtyard Aperture

Pattern Filmstrip

At six floors below the aperture, courtyard glazing starts to lose its effectiveness in providing diffuse sky illumination. However, the courtyard does provide views to the exterior and some balancing illumination to reduce contrast across the office section. Since the floor plate is narrow, 85% of the floor area receives sufficient daylight to meet 300 lux of horizontal illumination.

Pattern 6: Courtyard Depth and Width

Four Floors Below Courtyard Aperture

Pattern Filmstrip

Despite being four floors below the aperture, courtyard glazing provides balanced illumination across the section, reducing contrast, and providing high levels of diffuse daylight at the office workstations. The false color image begins to indicate lower levels of interior surface brightness on the interior surfaces on the courtyard side. However, sufficient illumination is present to meet the criteria of 300 lux at 100% of the floor area.

Pattern 6: Courtyard Depth and Width

Two Floors Below Courtyard Aperture

Pattern Filmstrip

Two floors below the aperture, the courtyard glazing provides balanced illumination across the section, reducing contrast, and providing high levels of diffuse daylight at the office workstations. 100% of the floor area is illuminated at levels exceeding 300 lux.

Pattern 6: Courtyard Depth and Width

Top Floor

Pattern Filmstrip

The provision of a central courtyard provides balanced illumination across the section, reducing contrast, and providing high levels of diffuse daylight at the office workstations. 100% of the floor area is illuminated at levels exceeding 300 lux.

Pattern 6: Courtyard Depth and Width

No Courtyard

Pattern Filmstrip

In this case, the open office area is illuminated by glazing from only one side. The absence of a central courtyard creates a unilaterally illuminated space. Despite the narrow section depth of 36’-0”, the perimeter is quite bright while the back wall is substantially less illuminated. Though the narrow section of the office floor plate is largely illuminated from one side, the contrast of perimeter to core creates a “cave” effect, which often results in blinds being closed and daylight performance being substantially diminished. Since the floor plate is narrow, 85% of the floor area receives sufficient daylight to meet 300 lux of horizontal illumination.

Pattern 6: Courtyard Depth and Width

10’-0” Courtyard Width

Pattern Filmstrip

A four-story 10’-0” x 36’-0” courtyard is constrained to the point where it no longer provides effective daylight illumination to the third floor of the offices building. Courtyard glazing remains dark, similar to a core condition creating a “cave” effect which is illustrated in the false color image. Despite the dark surfaces at the courtyard side of the office  85% of the floor area receives sufficient daylight to meet 300 lux of horizontal illumination since the floor plate is quite narrow.

Pattern 6: Courtyard Depth and Width

20’-0” Courtyard Width

Pattern Filmstrip

A four-story 20’-0” x 36’-0” courtyard provides effective daylight illumination to the third floor of the offices building. Courtyard glazing provides balanced illumination across the section, reducing contrast, and providing high levels of diffuse daylight at the office workstations, though surface brightness from the courtyard is beginning to dissipate. 100% of the floor area is illuminated at levels exceeding 300 lux.

Pattern 6: Courtyard Depth and Width

35’-0” Courtyard Width

Pattern Filmstrip

A four-story 35’-0” x 36’-0” courtyard provides effective daylight illumination to the third floor of the offices building. Courtyard glazing provides balanced illumination across the section, reducing contrast, and providing high levels of diffuse daylight at the office workstations. 100% of the floor area is illuminated at levels exceeding 300 lux.

Pattern 6: Courtyard Depth and Width

56’-0” Courtyard Width (As Built)

Pattern Filmstrip

A four-story 56’-0” x 36’-0” courtyard provides effective daylight illumination to the third floor of the offices building. Courtyard glazing provides balanced illumination across the section, reducing contrast, and providing high levels of diffuse daylight at the office workstations. 100% of the floor area is illuminated at levels exceeding 300 lux. A small patch of carefully controlled direct sunlight at the aisle way provides sparkle and additional diffuse light on the ceiling.
